Argentina Weather

Argentina is a country of extraordinary geographical contrasts, stretching from the subtropical north to the icy landscapes of Tierra del Fuego in the far south. Its vast size offers a diverse range of climates, making it a year-round destination. Depending on the region and the time of year, you will find conditions suited to your preferences, whether you are looking to explore glaciers, trek through mountain deserts, or enjoy vibrant urban culture.

The seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere:

Spring (September to November): An excellent time for Buenos Aires, Mendoza, the northwest and northern Patagonia. The countryside is green, temperatures are comfortable and the hiking season begins in the south.

Summer (December to February): The best season for Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and outdoor adventures. It is also the busiest period in many southern destinations, particularly around Christmas, New Year and January.

Autumn (March to May): One of the most beautiful periods to visit Argentina. Mendoza’s vineyards take on autumn colours, while the forests of the Lake District become spectacular shades of gold and red. The weather is also excellent for Buenos Aires and the northwest.

Winter (June to August): The ideal season for skiing in Bariloche and the Andes. Buenos Aires remains enjoyable for cultural and culinary experiences, while the northwest is generally dry and clear. Southern Patagonia is colder, with shorter days and some seasonal closures, but winter offers a dramatically different perspective on the region.

*Note: Across many regions in Argentina, particularly in the North and Patagonia, the diurnal temperature range (amplitud térmica) is significant. It is common to experience warm, sunny days followed by sharp drops in temperature after sunset. We highly recommend dressing in layers to stay comfortable throughout your journey.

Buenos Aires & the Pampas

Regions: Buenos Aires, Tigre, San Antonio de Areco, the Pampas and the Atlantic Coast.

Buenos Aires enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, making it a year-round destination. Summers are warm and humid, while winters are generally mild, although temperatures can feel cooler on rainy days. The wider Pampas region, with its vast grasslands and traditional estancias, experiences a similar climate.

Temperatures: Summer temperatures generally range from 25°C to 32°C, while winter daytime temperatures are usually around 8°C to 15°C. Spring and autumn are pleasantly mild.

Best Time to Visit: September to November and March to May are ideal for exploring Buenos Aires and visiting the countryside .

Mendoza & the Wine Country

Regions: Mendoza, Luján de Cuyo, Maipú, the Uco Valley, Potrerillos and the foothills of the Andes.

Mendoza lies in a naturally dry landscape at the foot of the Andes, with abundant sunshine, very little rainfall and large temperature variations between day and night. The region’s irrigation canals transform the arid terrain into a green oasis of vineyards and orchards.

Temperatures: Summers are warm and dry, with daytime temperatures often reaching 30°C or higher. Winters are cold but generally sunny, with cooler nights and occasional snow in the mountains.

Best Time to Visit: October to April is an excellent period for exploring Mendoza’s vineyards. March is particularly atmospheric during the grape harvest, when the Vendimia season brings the region to life. April and May can also be beautiful as the vineyards take on autumn colours.

Salta, Jujuy & the Andean Northwest

Regions: Salta, Jujuy, Cafayate, Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahuaca, the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the Salinas Grandes.

The northwest of Argentina has one of the country’s most distinctive climates and landscapes. The region ranges from the subtropical valleys around Salta to the high-altitude deserts of Jujuy, where intense sunshine, dry air and dramatic temperature changes between day and night are characteristic.

Temperatures: Daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, ranging from around 20°C to 28°C, although temperatures can vary considerably with altitude. Nights can be surprisingly cold, particularly in the highlands.

Best Time to Visit: April to November is generally the most comfortable period for exploring the region, with dry conditions and clear skies. The summer months, particularly January to March, bring a greater chance of rain, which can occasionally affect mountain roads.

Iberá Wetlands & Northeast Argentina

Regions: Esteros del Iberá, Corrientes, Posadas and the Ibera Wetlands, Iguassu Falls

The northeast is one of Argentina’s warmest and most humid regions. The vast Esteros del Iberá wetlands form one of South America’s great wildlife destinations, with lagoons, marshes, grasslands and waterways supporting an extraordinary diversity of species.

Temperatures: The region remains warm throughout much of the year, with temperatures generally ranging from 20°C to 30°C . Summers are hotter, wetter and more humid, while the cooler months are more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Best Time to Visit: May to October is particularly rewarding for wildlife observation, when cooler and drier conditions make exploring the wetlands more comfortable. Wildlife can be seen throughout the year, however.

At Iguazú Falls, the subtropical climate supports lush rainforest and spectacular waterfalls. The falls are accessible throughout the year, although water levels and rainfall vary considerably by season. The falls are at the fullest in the rainy season, but usually at that time most of the trails are closed. This is the case from December to February, which is also a busy time with lots of crowds. For clear skies and hiking the trails is best to go during the dry season, so from June onwards. There is never a safe bet.

Northern Patagonia & the Lake District

Regions: Bariloche, Villa La Angostura, San Martín de los Andes, the Seven Lakes Route, Nahuel Huapi National Park and the Lake District.

Northern Patagonia is a region of crystal-clear lakes, dense forests and snow-capped Andean peaks. The climate is cooler than in central Argentina, with warm but comfortable summers, colourful autumns and cold winters with reliable snowfall in the mountains.

Temperatures: Summer daytime temperatures generally range from 20°C to 25°C. Winter days are often around 6°C to 10°C, while nights can fall to 0°C or below. Mountain areas are considerably colder and receive heavy snowfall.

Best Time to Visit: October to April is ideal for hiking, scenic road trips and lake activities. December to February offers the warmest weather and longest days, while March and April are particularly beautiful as the forests turn shades of red, orange and gold. Winter, from June to September, is the season for skiing and snow activities around Bariloche and Cerro Catedral.

Southern Patagonia

Regions: El Calafate, El Chaltén, Los Glaciares National Park, Lago Argentino, Puerto Natales and the Patagonian steppe.

Further south, Patagonia becomes wilder and more extreme. The climate is strongly influenced by the Southern Andes and the vast Patagonian steppe, with strong winds and rapidly changing weather conditions. Even during summer, visitors should be prepared for cool temperatures, rain and sudden changes in the weather.

Temperatures: Summer daytime temperatures generally range from 10°C to 18°C, depending on location and altitude. Winters are cold, with temperatures frequently falling below freezing at night and shorter daylight hours limiting outdoor activities.

Best Time to Visit: November to March is the best period for trekking and outdoor exploration. December to February offers the longest days and generally the most favourable conditions for hiking, while November and March can offer a quieter experience with fewer visitors.

Tierra del Fuego & Ushuaia

Regions: Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Beagle Channel and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

At the southernmost tip of Argentina, Tierra del Fuego experiences a cool, wet and often windy climate. Ushuaia, famously known as the world’s southernmost city, is surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes and the waters of the Beagle Channel.

Temperatures: Summers are cool, with daytime temperatures generally around 10°C to 18°C. Winters are cold, with daytime temperatures often close to 0°C to 5°C and regular snowfall.

Best Time to Visit: December to March is the best time for hiking, wildlife excursions and exploring Tierra del Fuego National Park. Winter, from June to September, is ideal for snow sports and enjoying Ushuaia’s winter landscapes. Ushuaia is also an important gateway for expedition cruises to Antarctica, with the sailing season generally running from November to March.

Argentina’s Atlantic Coast

Regions: Mar del Plata, Pinamar, Cariló, Villa Gesell, Bahía Blanca, Puerto Madryn, Península Valdés and the Valdés Peninsula.

Argentina’s long Atlantic coastline stretches from the popular seaside resorts of Buenos Aires Province to the remote shores of Patagonia. The climate varies significantly from north to south. The beaches of the Buenos Aires Province enjoy warm summers, while the Patagonian coast is cooler, drier and often windy, with extraordinary opportunities for marine wildlife encounters.

Temperatures: Along the northern coast, summer temperatures generally range from 22°C to 30°C, while winters are cool and often windy. Further south, around Puerto Madryn and Península Valdés, summers are mild to warm, with temperatures typically around 20°C to 28°C, while winter days can be considerably cooler.

Best Time to Visit: December to March is the best period for enjoying the beaches around Mar del Plata, Pinamar and Cariló. For wildlife, September to December is particularly rewarding around Península Valdés for southern right whale watching, while October to March offers excellent opportunities to observe penguins, sea lions and elephant seals.
