Brazil in May

January

May

Is May a good time to visit Brazil? Yes, May is a great month to visit the colonial towns in Minas Gerais.

Temperatures in Rio de Janeiro in May are between 20- 26°C. It is a great month for visiting Rio, Costa Verde, Paraty, Buzios and all the areas near Rio and Sao Paulo.

Don’t expect the high volume of water at Iguazu Falls, but expect clear blue skies, beautiful rainbows and open trails. Note that most of the trails around the falls are on the Argentinean side.

The southern beaches are best to skip, because it is cold and humin, since the Brazilian winter slowly starts to arrive, however it is one of the best time to visit the canyons of Aparados da Serra due to clear skies and good visibility.

May is not the best time to go to the north and northeastern tropical beaches of Bahia, Pernambuco and Ceará, it’s a wet month with high humidity and heavy rainfalls. The same is true for Fernando de Noronha.

It is still the rainy season in the Amazon, with the rainfall usually happening in the evening. May is not the best time for wildlife spotting. Wildlife doesn’t congregate around water sources, making it tough to find them. However, it is the best time to venture through the ‘varzeas’ in canoes and spot tree-climbing jaguars! This is usually not possible during the dry season when the water recedes.

It is a start of the dry season in the Pantanal. Wildlife is slightly easier to spot , but better wait till June-October. Birdlife is still excellent due to abundant fish, water and insects, spotting of caiman and capybara can be common, you may spot a jaguar too. The ground is drying out.

Is is not the best month to visit the Route of Emotions, Jericoacoara and Ceara, but it is still ok more or less. Rains are still common.
