The best time to visit Caño Cristales is from June to October / November, when the river is at its most vibrant, showcasing its extraordinary colors.

December to May is not the optimal season, as the river is less colorful.

Day 1 - Fly to la Macarena

Begin your journey with a morning flight from Bogotá to La Macarena, the gateway to the enchanting Caño Cristales. Upon arrival, the small town of La Macarena welcomes you with its laid-back charm. Spend the afternoon exploring the town, soaking in the atmosphere, and preparing for the adventures ahead. As evening approaches, settle into La Manigua Lodge, a serene retreat nestled in nature. Day 2 - Caño Cristalitos

After breakfast you will be debriefed about Sierra de La Macarena National Park, then you will embark on a journey to Caño Cristalitos. Transfer to the Guayabero River and glide upstream in a wooden canoe, observing the rich wildlife along the banks. Upon arrival at the farm, a 25-minute hike takes you to El Mirador, offering exceptional views of the surroundings. After lunch, continue your hike to Caño Cristalitos, where you can swim  in the crystal clear river. Marvel at the macarenia clavigera, the plant responsible for the river’s spectacular colors. Return to your lodge in the afternoon, with a chance to spot playful monkeys from your cabin. Enjoy a peaceful evening and dinner at the lodge, immersed in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Day 3 - Caño Cristales

After a hearty breakfast, prepare for a full day of exploration. Take a scenic canoe ride and a 4×4 vehicle journey to the heart of Sierra de La Macarena National Park. The hike to Caño Cristales is a gateway to a world of vibrant colors and crystal-clear waters. Spend the day following designated trails, swimming in natural pools, and enjoying a packed lunch amidst stunning landscapes. Return to your lodge by the same route in the afternoon. Participate in a unique cultural activity at the lodge, offering a deeper connection to the local traditions and way of life. Day 4 - Cano Cristales

Begin the day with a delicious breakfast at your lodge, before setting out for another adventure in Caño Cristales. Today you will explore more areas of this breathtaking landscapes. Follow different trails, discover new pools, and immerse yourself in the vibrant surroundings. After returning to the lodge in the afternoon, join a cacao workshop with local experts. Learn the art of chocolate-making, from bean to bar, and savor the rich flavors of fresh cacao. Enjoy dinner at the lodge and reflect on the day’s discoveries. Overnight at Manigua Lodge.

Day 5 - Ciudad de Piedra

Start your day with a good breakfast at your lodge before heading to the Guayabero River for a canoe ride upstream. Today’s journey takes you to the Raudal de Angosturas I, a turbulent river section known for its dramatic stone canyon. After contemplating, embark on a 90-minute hike to Ciudad de Piedra, a natural stone labyrinth with stunning rock formations. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a swim in Caño el Encanto, a smaller yet equally colorful stream. Return to the lodge in the afternoon for some rest before embarking on a night walk. With flashlights in hand, explore the reserve’s trails quietly to spot nocturnal wildlife. Dinner and overnight at La Manigua Lodge.

Day 6 - Guayabero River

Rise early for a serene sunrise experience on the Guayabero River, which is part of the Orinoco River basin, that meanders through the verdant heart of Colombia’s Amazon Basin. Take an exciting kayak excursion to explore the river’s calm waters. You will have a chance to appreciate the region’s natural beauty from a different perspective. After a fulfilling morning on the water, return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast featuring local flavors. In the afternoon visit the local market and then take another nature walk to the colorful rivers. Conclude your day with a delightful dinner at the lodge. Overnight at La Manigua Lodge.

Day 7 - Caño Piedra

After breakfast, embark on a 15-minute walk from your lodge to meet the horses. Enjoy a scenic 60-minute horseback ride through morichales and hills of the Colombian savannah, characteristic of the Llanos landscape, to reach Caño Piedra. If time permits, take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of a natural pool. Here you are in the middle of pure nature! Return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure. Reflect on your week’s adventures during a final dinner at La Manigua Lodge, enjoying the tranquility of your surroundings. Overnight at La Manigua Lodge.

Day 8 - Departure

After breakfast, prepare for your journey back to Bogotá. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some time to explore La Macarena. Take a final stroll through the town or relax at the lodge before heading to the airport. Fly back to Bogotá, where you can spend the afternoon exploring the city or preparing for your departure home.
