When to Visit

The Osa Peninsula is classified as a very humid tropical forest. This means that low or high-intensity rainfall can occur throughout the year.

November and December constitute the transition months from the rainy season to the dry season on the Pacific coast.
January to March (dry season) offer the most favorable conditions in terms of little or almost no rain. The temperature can reach 30 degrees Celsius during the day, with humidity between 70 and 80%.
April and May constitute the transition months towards the rainy season where the amount of rain increases a little more, the relative humidity increases and the temperature can drop a little more during the day.
From June to October the Osa Peninsula receives the greatest amount of rain of the year. The months to avoid are mainly September and October.

Day 1 - Fly to San Jose

Upon arrival at San Jose Airport, the driver will pick you up on arrivals and take you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure and relax after the long flight. Surrounded by lush mountains, the city offers a dynamic mix of history, art, and local flavors. For the first-time visitors, choose to explore the city’s rich culture and history by visiting the National Theater, a stunning architectural gem, and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. Stroll through Barrio Amón, which has charming colonial buildings and a vibrant art scene. Pass by the bustling Central Market and taste local delicacies like gallo pinto, rondon and chorreadas. Day 2 - Uvita de Osa

In the morning, embark on a scenic journey south through charming small towns and villages to reach Uvita de Osa, a serene coastal town on Costa Rica’s stunning Osa Peninsula (3,5 hours). Here you will discover pristine Pacific beaches, lush rainforests, and rolling mountains. Uvita’s tranquil waters and rich marine life make it a hotspot for snorkeling, diving, and dolphin watching, while nearby surf breaks attract wave enthusiasts. Inland, discover dense jungles, cascading waterfalls, and trails teeming with exotic wildlife like monkeys, toucans, and sloths. The town’s relaxed atmosphere and welcoming locals invite you to savor its culinary treasures, especially dishes featuring freshly caught seafood and tropical fruits. Day 3 - Marino Ballena National Park

After breakfast, explore the breathtaking Marino Ballena National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural attractions. This pristine park is named after its Whale Tail formation, a stunning natural sandbar that emerges at low tide, creating a unique shape visible from above. As you stroll along the golden sands and marvel at this geological wonder, keep your eyes on the horizon for a chance to spot majestic humpback whales, which migrate to these warm waters (July to October & December to March). The park is a haven for marine life, offering opportunities to see dolphins, sea turtles, and a vibrant array of tropical fish. Day 4 - Surfing & Waterfalls

Today go surfing, riding the waves of the Pacific. Playa Uvita has gentle beach breaks perfect for beginners, while Playa Hermosa, provides stronger, more consistent waves for intermediate surfers. Nearby Dominical features powerful, challenging waves ideal for experienced surfers, along with surf schools and a vibrant surf culture. For a quieter experience, Playa Ballena offers occasional surfable waves in a scenic setting. The best surf conditions are usually during the rainy season (May to November) and in the mornings when winds are calm. Day 5 - Drake Bay

Today travel to Drake Bay (3 hours), a hidden treasure on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, offering a serene escape into nature’s untouched splendor. This picturesque coastal town serves as a gateway to some of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems. Surrounded by dense tropical rainforests teeming with exotic wildlife, Drake Bay invites you to explore its tranquil white-sand beaches, such as the idyllic Playa Colorada and the secluded Playa San Josécito, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. Day 6 - Cano Island

Today visit Caño Island (20 km away), a dazzling gem of the Pacific Coast and a dream destination for diving and snorkeling. This small and ecologically rich island is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and remarkable marine biodiversity. Snorkeling here is an awe-inspiring experience, offering the chance to swim alongside schools of tropical fish, manta rays, sea turtles, and even white-tip reef sharks in their natural habitat. You might also spot dolphins and humpback whales during migration seasons. The coral formations around the island create an underwater wonderland. Day 7 - Corcovado National Park

Today explore Corcovado National Park (1,5 hours away), one of the most important parks in Costa Rica, famous for its rich biodiversity. The park spans vast stretches of untouched rainforest, pristine beaches, and mangroves. An extraordinary variety of wildlife, including coatis, tapirs, scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, and even elusive jaguars and pumas can be spotted here. Birdwatchers will be in awe of the vibrant avian life, with sightings of toucans, trogons, and harpy eagles. Day 8 - Drake Bay

Today is a free day in Drake Bay. Start your morning with a refreshing swim in the calm, turquoise waters of the bay, perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying the stunning natural surroundings. For a touch of local culture, wander through the charming village of Drake, a quaint coastal town where you’ll find friendly locals, small artisan shops, and an authentic Costa Rican vibe. Day 9 - Santa Maria de Dota

Today travel along the tranquil waters of the Sierpe River to the picturesque town of Santa María de Dota (5,5 hours), a charming mountain town, nestled in the misty highlands of Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of dense mangroves, home to exotic wildlife like herons, crocodiles, and playful monkeys. Santa María de Dota is renowned for its stunning views, crisp climate, and world-class coffee plantations. This area is part of the famous Los Santos Coffee Route, celebrated for producing some of the finest coffee in the world. Day 10 - In search of the Quetzal

Today embark on an adventure searching for the elusive resplendent quetzal in Los Quetzales National Park. Nestled in the lush cloud forests of the Los Santos region, Santa Maria de Dota is one of the best places in the world to witness these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. The quetzal, revered for its dazzling green and red plumage and graceful, flowing tail feathers, has long been a symbol of beauty and freedom in Central American culture. Along the way, you’ll also encounter other fascinating wildlife, from colorful hummingbirds and trogons to playful squirrels and butterflies. The tranquil setting, with its towering oak trees, cool mountain air, and the occasional call of the quetzal echoing through the forest, creates a magical atmosphere. Day 11 - Departure

Enjoy a final, leisurely breakfast, absorbing the last tranquil moments surrounded by lush nature. Then, you will be transferred back to the San Jose Airport for your flight, enjoying the picturesque landscapes along the way as a perfect farewell to Costa Rica.
