When to Visit

The best times to visit Kyushu, specifically Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Aso, Takachiho, and Beppu, are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer the most favorable weather conditions for exploring the region.
Spring (March to May): one of the most pleasant times to visit Kyushu. The weather is mild, and cherry blossoms are in full bloom, creating picturesque landscapes across Fukuoka and Nagasaki. It’s an ideal time for outdoor activities such as hiking in Aso and exploring the scenic beauty of Takachiho Gorge.
Autumn (September to November): another excellent time to visit Kyushu. The temperatures are comfortable, and the fall foliage transforms the region into a stunning array of colors. This season is perfect for visiting Aso’s volcanic landscapes and enjoying the serene beauty of Takachiho. Festivals and cultural events are also abundant in Fukuoka and Nagasaki during this time.
Summer (June to August): warm and humid, with temperatures often reaching high levels. While it can be a lively time with numerous festivals and events, the heat and humidity can make outdoor activities challenging. However, the coastal areas of Fukuoka provide a refreshing escape, and summer is a great time to experience the local culture and festivities.
Winter (December to February): relatively mild compared to other parts of Japan, but it can still get chilly, especially in the mountainous areas like Aso. This season offers a quieter experience with fewer tourists. Beppu’s hot springs are particularly enjoyable in winter, providing a relaxing retreat. Takachiho’s landscapes also offer a unique and tranquil winter beauty.

Day 1 - Arrival in Fukuoka

Today, you will arrive in Fukuoka, the dynamic gateway to Kyushu Island and the largest city in the region, which harmoniously blends modernity and a rich cultural heritage. Fukuoka serves as the perfect launchpad for your Japanese adventure, offering a captivating mix of urban sophistication and traditional charm. With its vibrant cityscape, bustling shopping districts, and mouthwatering culinary scene, Fukuoka promises an immersive experience without the overwhelming pace of Japan’s larger metropolises. Day 2 - Fukuoka

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, your English-speaking guide will pick you up for a day of exploration in Fukuoka. Start with a visit to the Fukuoka Castle ruins, a historical site offering a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. The castle, originally built in the early 17th century, was once a grand structure and remains an important cultural landmark. Explore the remnants of the castle walls and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Next, visit Ohori Park, a beautiful urban park centered around a large pond. The park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, with its tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty providing a peaceful escape from the bustling city. In the evening, immerse yourself in the local culinary scene at the Yatai food stalls. These open-air food stalls have been a staple of Fukuoka’s nightlife for over a century, offering a variety of delicious street food such as Hakata ramen, tempura, and yakitori. Day 3 - Kumamoto

After an early breakfast, transfer to Hakata station and take the Japanese Bullet train to Kumamoto. On a scenic 1.5-hour ride you can enjoy passing by the country side of southern Japan. Upon arrival, head straight to Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s most impressive and well-fortified castles. Originally built in the early 17th century, the castle has been meticulously restored after being damaged in a 2016 earthquake. Your private tour will provide insights into its history and architectural significance. After the tour, check into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring Kumamoto Downtown at your leisure. Day 4 - Aso

Begin your day with an early breakfast, followed by an exciting trip to Mount Aso with your English-speaking guide (2 hours). Mount Aso is home to one of the world’s largest active volcanic craters. Upon arrival, marvel at the vast expanse of the crater and the raw power of the volcanic landscape. Choose your adventure: hike scenic trails, explore fascinating lava formations, or opt for a thrilling helicopter ride over the caldera. Each activity promises an unforgettable experience amidst the dramatic natural scenery. After a day of adventure, retreat to a traditional ryokan where you can relax in a private onsen. Day 5 - Takachiho

After checking out in the morning, travel to Takachiho Gorge (1,5 hours), renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Start with a serene boat tour along the gorge, surrounded by towering cliffs and lush greenery. The scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere make this a memorable experience. Following the boat tour, embark on a hike through Takachiho’s pristine landscapes, exploring forested trails and ancient shrines. The area is steeped in myth and legend, adding a mystical element to your journey. After a day of exploration, transfer to Beppu, Japan’s famous onsen town. Relax and rejuvenate in your hotel’s onsen, soaking in the soothing mineral-rich waters. Overnight at Yamada Bessou.

Day 6 - Beppu

Enjoy a slow morning at your own pace before being picked up by your English-speaking guide for the Beppu Hells Tour. The Hells of Beppu, or “Jigoku,” are a series of unique hot springs known for their colorful and boiling features. Each hell offers a different experience, from vividly colored water to bubbling mud pools. Highlights include: Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), a striking cobalt-blue hot spring, Oniishibozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk’s Head Hell), featuring bubbling mud pools that resemble the shaven heads of monks and Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), notable for its red-colored water, caused by iron oxide. After the tour, enjoy a relaxing soak in your own private onsen at the hotel. Overnight at Yamada Bessou.

Day 7 - Return to Fukuoka

After checking out of your hotel in the morning, a local train will take you back to Fukuoka (2 hours). Your luggage will be waiting for you at the hotel reception, so you can head straight to exploring the city. Explore Fukuoka’s stunning beaches, such as Momochi Beach, with soft white sands and clear blue waters. Take a leisurely stroll along the shore, soak up the sun, or simply unwind with the gentle sound of waves lapping at the beach. Visit the iconic Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, where you’ll find the picturesque white torii gate standing gracefully in the water. Return to Fukuoka city in the afternoon. Day 8 - Departure

Enjoy one last leisurely breakfast before taking a reflective stroll through a nearby garden or along the city streets.
