Kenya Family Safari

The Kenya Family Safari Tour is a 10-day private guided road circuit from Nairobi. This trip will take you through three different regions of Kenya, from Nairobi to Samburu, on the other side of the Equator, then to the Rift Valley to lake Nakuru and finally to the beloved savannah of Masai Mara. You will stay in luxury tented camps with excellent wildlife viewing settings. You will be wowed by the scenery and the abundant wildlife, visiting several different national parks. Depending on your international flights in and out of Kenya, you can add days at both ends of the trip to fit well with the schedule and activities. The program can be easily transformed into a fly-in safari. Some parts of the journey can be done by flight, such as Samburu to Masai Mara and Masai Mara to Nairobi.

International flights are not included in the package price. We give you the freedom to use miles and choose your preferred airline, and if you are stuck we can help you find the right connections to fit well with the start and finish of your trip. Return flights to Kenya start from £700 per person, depending on the connections and time of the year. 

We can arrange domestic flights internally, shall you choose to move around by air within Kenya.

This is a sample itinerary and prices are correct at the time of writing. We can tailor the itinerary to suit your plans by changing the length of the trip or the order of activities. Day 1 - Arrive in Nairobi

Today you will arrive at NBO Airport. You will be met and transferred to the hotel. Situated along the Nairobi River, the capital of Kenya is East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city. It serves as an excellent starting point for African safari trips around Kenya. Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place to be. There are some fascinating attractions: its cafe culture, unbridled nightlife, the National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum and the world’s only urban game reserve. Make sure you pay a visit to the elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for a once in a lifetime experience. Overnight at Kempinski.

Day 2 - Nairobi to Samburu

Today you will be transferred by road to Samburu (5h). Set on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River and neighboring the Buffalo Springs National Park, Samburu National Reserve is characterized by a spectacular landscape of rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. The park is home to abundant wildlife including a variety of rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the long-necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra, and Beisa Oryx. You can also spot over 900 elephants, a variety of predators, and over 450 bird species. The ancient culture of the Samburu people is still alive here, and it is possible to see two unique customs firsthand: watch as herds of cattle respond to each man’s individual voice as they call and see the tribesmen perform incredible dances that go back hundreds of years. Day 3 - Samburu

After an early breakfast, depart on a full day exploring Samburu  with morning and afternoon game drives. The camp is surrounded by doum palms and other beautiful indigenous trees. Huge herds of elephant, prides of lion or the solitary leopard amongst other game are regular visitors around the camp providing excellent game viewing in spectacular scenic background of rugged rolling hills. Dining is a culinary experience with al-fresco breakfast, 3 course lunch and 4 course candle lit gourmet dinner set either under the African sky or inside the well appointed dining area. Day 4 - Samburu to Nakuru

Early departure by road to Nakuru. Afternoon game drive in Soysambu Conservancy around Lake Elementitia, a unique and beautiful wildlife reserve, laying on the border of the Elmenteita Badlands and Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. Vast areas of the glassy lakes, beautiful wetlands, and purple mountains create scenes perfect for walking tours, game drives and self-exploration adventures, as well as some breathtaking photography opportunities. Huge flocks of pink pelicans, which breed here each year, can be seen swooping in. Animal lovers will also delight in the chance to spot colobus monkeys, Rothschild’s giraffes, and about 450 bird species. Overnight at Mbweha Camp.

Day 5 - Nakuru

After breakfast start the morning game drive in the park. Nestled on the southern border of Lake Nakuru National Park, Mbweha Camp overlooks the scenic Eburru and Mau ranges. Experience day and night game drives, bush walks, picnic lunches, a visit to the prehistoric site of Kariandusi, as well as trip into the Nakuru national park. This shallow, salty lake is home to flocks of sensational flamingos and many other bird species including pelicans, cormorants, black-winged stilts, avocets and migrant European birds. Beside its magnificent bird life, it is also one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino. Watch these magnificent mammals grazing the shoreline of the lake or wallowing in the mud. Overnight at Mbweha Camp.

Day 6 - Nakuru to Masai Mara

After breakfast, depart to Lake Naivasha for a boat ride and a visit of Crescent Island. Naivasha is a vast freshwater lake that supports a great diversity of game as well as more than 400 species of bird. In the afternoon, after settling at the hotel, enjoy a boat ride of about 1h on the lake and a game walk on Crescent Island, a private wildlife sanctuary. Cruise through pods of hippos and listen to the shrill cry of the fish eagle. The boat ride provides an excellent opportunity to watch the birds up close in a stunning and tranquil environment. On the island, the terrain is flat, making it easy to walk. Then head onto The Mara with a packed lunch (4,5 h). Overnight at Ngenche Safari Camp.

Day 7 - Masai Mara

One of Kenya’s undisputed natural highlights is the Masai Mara National Reserve, which sprawls across more than 1500 square kilometres of the country’s southwest. The park protects a phenomenal array of game, including elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo, as well as crocodile and hippopotamus in the Mara River. The birdlife is no less impressive, with over 450 species. However, the true highlight here is the Great Migration, recognized as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Today experience the savannah and meets its dwellers on a morning and afternoon drive with an experienced guide. Overnight at Ngenche Safari Camp.

Day 8 - Masai Mara

After an early morning wake-up call with tea and coffee at your tent, you will depart on a morning game drive. Return to the camp and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Spend the rest of the morning at leisure. Located in the heart of the Masai Mara, well hidden in the beautiful greenery of riverine forest, Ngenche offers panoramic views over the confluence of the Mara and Talek Rivers overlooking a hippo pool and crocodiles always in close proximity. Mara Ngenche is unfenced and is designed to allow the exciting movement of animals through the grounds white offering an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere for experiencing the full adventure of the African bush. After lunch at the camp depart on an afternoon game drive. Overnight at Ngenche Safari Camp.

Day 9 - Masai Mara

Today meet your driver-guide and start the day in the savannah. Game drives take place in the early to mid-morning and in the mid- to late afternoon, when wildlife is most active, offering the best sightings. The grassy plains are home to a wide range of species, from a pride of lion to cheetah stalking their prey and hippos, wallowing in muddy pools. There is never a dull moment in the Masai Mara. During the heat of the day you will return to camp for a rest, lunch and, of course, the tradition of freshly baked cake and tea or coffee before your afternoon drive. At dinner, share stories of your day’s adventures with other guests. Overnight at Ngenche Safari Camp.

Day 10 - Back to Nairobi

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Nairobi by road (5h). Time permitting, on the road you can also stop to visit a team farm which is located in the northern outskirts of Nairobi. Depending on your further travel plans, take some time to relax in Nairobi. Although the city can be quite hectic, there are charming hidden places, surrounded by tall lush trees and blooming exotic flowers. Spring is really colourful in Nairobi with all the purple jacaranda trees in bloom. What a sight! Dining and shopping are very good here. Today enjoy a relaxing time at the hotel or head out to one of the good local restaurant for a dining experience.
