Day 1 – Welcome to the Kingdom of Lemurs

Today you will arrive in Fort Dauphin. You will be met and transferred by road to Berenty (about 4h drive). This reserve has a rich gallery of flora and fauna. Due to isolation, Madagascar wildlife has evolved on its own unique way, of which, lemurs are the most knows species. More than 100 species have been recorded. Berenty is one of the best places to spot lemurs, a large population of them living here. The name “Kingdom of Lemurs” is there for a reason. Berenty is also the place for spotting many endemic birds of Madagascar. After refreshing, visit the community museum. After dinner, take a night walk to spot nocturnal lemurs and reptiles. Overnight at Berenty Lodge.

Day 2 – More nature, more lemurs, more birds

At dawn, go on a bird-watching expedition with a local guide along the Mandrare river valley. Watch the sifakas opening their arms to the sun – their ‘good morning’ ritual. Enjoy the coolness of the forest before breakfast. In the afternoon explore the reserve. Visits in the reserve are unlimited for resident guests, so you can either explore on your own or with a guide, as long as you remain on the path and do not feed the animals. Berenty is the place to see the nepenthès fields with the local carnivorous plants, the endemic triangular palm and the huge areas of sisal plantations. At night take a walk to admire nocturnal animals. Overnight at Berenty Lodge.

Continue sailing up to the Col. More and more wonderful views out there. Don’t miss the nepenthes, a carnivorous plant. Lokaro bay, a round bay with green water will show up at the end of the trip. Toliara is often called City of the Sun due to strong sunshine. Upon arrival, transfer to Antsokay Arboretum, a botanical park of 40 ha located in the south-east of the town. Local plants, threatened by constant deforestation and bushfires are reproduced and multiplied here by seed or transplant. This is a really beautiful garden to see. Day 7 – A day at sea visiting Nosy Ve and Nosy Satrana

After breakfast take a sea tour. Two coral islands surround Anakao and its lagoon, Nosy Ve and Nosy Satrana. Nosy Ve is home to the only colony of tail-straw tropic birds, also called the red-tailed phaeton. They hide all over the island to lay eggs and hatch. Nosy Satrana is located inside the lagoon itself. Visit both islands on a pirogue, when the tide is right. The site is also ideal for whale watching along the coast during the austral winter. Spend the day swimming and snorkelling. Enjoy the feeling of being at the end of the world. The guides will prepare a delicious lunch from the fresh catch. Overnight at Anakao Ocean Lodge.

This unique alkaline lake is a bird paradise, among which pink flamingos. You will also see huge baobabs, colourful Mahafaly tombs and a cave. Later on, visit Ampotaka, which is not far from Betioky. This part of Madagascar is very dry and the local people dig out cavities in the baobab trunks, serving as water reserves. Finish the trip at the stunning Ambola beach. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at Ambola Lodge.
